Exam Paper Pattern: WBCS Examination will be
held in two stages,
- Preliminary Examination (Objective Type) and
- Main Examination (Both Objective and Conventional Type-Written) and
- Personality Test
Prelims Examination
Details: WBCS Prelims exam will consist of only one paper, that is, a paper
on General Studies.
- Questions: 200
- Marks: 200
- Duration of Exam: 2½ hours
WBCS Prelims Syllabus: Check this section carefully-
English Composition: This section consists of the
following terms as
- Synonyms
- Antonyms
- Idioms and Phrases
- Vocabulary test
- Phrasal Verbs
- The same words bearing more than one meaning

General Science: These topics related to General
Appreciation & understanding of science, including matters of everyday
observation & experience.
History of India: Here the candidates will be asked
questions for General understanding of the subject in its social, economic and
political aspects.
Geography of India with special reference to West Bengal:
- Physical, Social and Economic Geography of the country
- Including the main features of Indian Agricultural and Natural Resources with special reference to West Bengal
Indian Polity and Economy:
- Knowledge of the country‘s Political System
- Panchayatee Raj
- Community Development and Planning in India
- Questions on the Indian National Movement will relate to the nature and character of the Nineteenth Century Resurgence
- Growth of Nationalism and Attainment of Independence
General Mental Ability:
- Logical perception
- Understanding and natural conclusion
Mains Examination Details:
- There will be two papers of optional subject of 200 marks each.
- Each paper, Compulsory or Optional and it will carry 200 marks and duration of exam will be of 3 hours.
Out of 6 compulsory papers four papers are as given below:
- General Studies- I,
- General Studies- II,
- The Constitution of India and Indian Economy including role and functions of Reserve Bank of India and
- Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning
Remaining two compulsory papers: Paper – I and Paper
– II will be of conventional type written examination.

- General Knowledge
- Current Affairs
Paper V: The Constitution of India and Indian Economy
including role and functions of Reserve Bank of India.
Paper VI:
- Arithmetic and
- Test of Reasoning
Personality Test:
Candidates selected for the Main Examination (Written / Objective) will be
called to participate at a Personality Test. It will be conducted to assess the
candidate‘s personal qualities e.g., alertness of mind, power of clear and
logical exposition, intellectual and moral integrity, leadership and also the
candidate‘s range of interests.
Marks for the
Personality Test: Check this out-

- Group C: 150 Marks
- Group D: 100 Marks
Selection Procedure: There
